Six former players, coaches added to OHS Hall of Fame

MURFREESBORO – Oakland High baseball will induct six former players and coaches – Tyler Burnett, Drew Fann, P.J. Polk, Jeff Mitchell (coach), Randy Ghee and Jimmy Carver – into the program’s Hall of Fame at a banquet Thursday, January 19.

Mitchell served as an assistant coach for 13 years with the Patriots and was a part of state championship teams in 1999 and 2000. Oakland won nine district titles, five region championships and made four state tournament appearances during his tenure, compiling 368 victories during his tenure.

Burnett, Fann and Polk were teammates from 2004-07 at OHS, leading the 2007 squad that set a school record for wins, finishing 42-2 but one game shy of the state tournament. The club won district and region titles that season as well.

Burnett earned All-State honors as well as District and Region MVP as a senior, batting .409 and posting a 9-1 record on the mound. He was a four-year starter at shortstop for the Patriots. He played three seasons at Middle Tennessee, garnering Second Team All-Sun Belt accolades and ABCA All-South Central Region honors as a junior. He was selected in the 17th round that year by the Houston Astros and played professionally for three years in the organization.

Polk was named All-State during his senior campaign and received All-America honors from Louisville Slugger along with earning Player of the Year accolades from the Daily News Journal and All-District, All-Region and All-Midstate recognition. He played collegiately at Tennessee, earning SEC All-Freshman accolades in 2008 and leading the time in batting average, hits, runs scored and stolen bases as a junior. He was drafted in the 13th round by the Detroit Tigers in 2010, playing two seasons in the organization.

Fann garnered All-District honors over his final three seasons and was named All-Area as a junior and senior. He attended Vanderbilt and was a member of the baseball team for five seasons, playing in 98 career games. The Commodores made the NCAA Tournament each of his last four years, reaching two Super Regionals and the program’s first College World Series in 2011. He spent four years at the Director of Operations for baseball at Vanderbilt after his playing career ended and also worked as an Assistant AD on West End.

Carver was a member of state tournament teams in 1978 and 1979 under head coach Jack Jolly. He was a four-year letterwinner for the Patriots who posted a .320 career batting average and nine wins on the mound. Carver played collegiately at Freed-Hardeman and served 20 years as a youth baseball coach in Murfreesboro.

Ghee posted All-District accolades as a junior in 1976 for head coach Jack Jolly. He was also recognized in the 1975 edition of Babe Ruth Baseball’s “Athletes of the Year” Annual that is on permanent display at the Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, N.Y.
